PHCC surfing with Amoeba Kayaks
NEW DATE: Sunday 2nd April
Last year I was lucky enough to be given a Carver surf kayak by Amoeba to test and review. The kayak was a lot of fun and we enjoyed taking it to some of our favourite breaks and testing it in all kinds of conditions. We've now been approached by Glyn Ovens and Nick Stillwell of Amoeba kayaks who are going to join us on one of our club surfing outings. They're going to bring along a whole bunch of Carvers for club members to try out, surf, and give him as much feedback as we can. I'm sure it'll be a two way process and a great day out's surfing for all. There will also be an apportunity to buy new, and nearly new boats.
Who's this trip for?
It's for everyone! Juniors, seniors, second saturday surfers, and anyone who enjoys a good day out and is prepared to get wet. It's not often we get the offer of trying out new kayaks for free, especially specialist surf kayaks. It would be great if we can get a good turn out from the club's paddlers. Whether you're new to surfing or normally surf in a river or play boat, why not come along and try a surf kayak for the very first time - you'll be amazed at the speed you can achieve along the wave! If you normally surf the most hi-tec of lighter than light surf machines then come along too as we'd be glad of your feedback and you can help show other paddlers what kayak surfing is all about. Most of all though it's going to be a fun day on a great beach with lots of friends.
What's the plan
To have more chance of some good surf we're planning to drive down to Devon to either Saunton or Bude on Sunday March 19th. These will give us a nice sandy beach too on which to launch, and land swap kayaks with ease. A definite plan will be settled later on when we've had a look at the weather forecast. The contact numbers can be found below to register your interest and be kept in the loop or to call on the Friday before.
FREE Coaching for junior members
Once again our residnet (aspirant) level 5 coach is coming to the fore and offering a one day surf clinic for the first 8 junior club members that express an interest. If you've never been on one of Bertie's surf courses then you're missing out on an awful lot. You'll maximise your confidence in the white water, learn to bottom turn like a demon and top turn like a champion. Juniors will need their own boats for most of the coaching but we hope to get you all in proper surf kayaks later in the day.
Contact Matt Goulden on 01202 658173 if you'd like to book a place. (All juniors must have responsible adults looking after them)
Bertie's surf clinics are a great way to properly learn the basics and progress to more advanced surf moves. If you're too old for this training come along and we'll persude Bertie to run some follow up sessions (don't tell him that yet though!)

The review of the Carver was in December's Paddles magazine, which is always worth a read.
