Portland Bill

Chesil to Swanage open crossing

May 2007

Spring tides and a cancelled weekend trip left a gap in which Victor led aspiring 4* paddlers Paulette, Jenny, Frazer, Gunny and Alan on a 30 mile day trip with Viv, Steve, Dave and Shalto. We went around Portland Bill and followed the current (GPS speed 9kts!) straight across the open sea and Purbeck coast, round St Aldhelms Head, Anvil Point and Peveril Ledge to Swanage. A dash of sea sickness (plenty of waves), a rescue between rocks (more waves) and lunch at Dancing Ledge added to the experience and entertainment but left us fighting against the current at the end! A fantastic trip that certainly ticked the 4* box. Many thanks Victor.

Portland Bill

Birds, Babes and boats around the Bill

April 2007

Ian's pics of a paddle around Portland Bill. The trip was lead by Victor ( many thanks Victor) for most of us i it was our first circumnavigation of the Bill and the infamous races of the Bill (but they were fine although the potentional for disaster was evident in more challenging conditions) we all had a good day for some it was an introduction to shelving beaches to get on and off  (the sound of crunching glass fibre is a horrible sound but we had no major problems) Gunny was our sacrificial plastic probe (every sea paddle needs one) Thanks mate for saving our glass bottoms? We all had a good day in perfect conditions thanks again Victor.

West Cork

Atlantic Sea Kayaking, West Cork

April 2007

Photos from a wonderful long weekend spent with level 5 coach Jim Kennedy of Atlantic Sea Kayaking in West Cork, Ireland. We had some jaw dropping paddles with island crossings, caves, arches, complete darkness, sea mists, large swells, dead calms, seals, porpoises, whales, bio-phosphorescence, and monkeys thrown in. With Jim showing us the best places to stay, eat, and introducing us to the friendly locals, we were looked after and made to feel welcome. Were we really only there for 4 days? It seems like weeks! Just a matter of time until we return. Click on the title link for photos.

4 star

Inaugural trip for 4* sea kayak course

April 2007

Instructor Steve took us for a two day overnight practice run of self sufficiency camping from Lake Pier to north end of Swanage beach, in readiness for bigger things to come. Jenni, Paulette, Frazer, Gunny, Dave and Alan were in training but we also enjoyed the advice from and company of Viv, Vic, Ian, and Allen for a paddle, some beer, wine and chat around the camp fire. It all started with squeezing a car load of stuff into 2 or 3 hatches and Paulette even managed to bring a birthday cake without squashing it, for Ian's birthday treat! With barmy Summer weather for April, survival was not an issue, even for laden boat rolling practice at the end! Thanks Steve. Photos by Alan.

Rescue

Autumn rescue

April 2007

Late last autumn we went for a paddle to the harbour entrance. The forecast was F4-5 and conditions when we set off were not bad. By the time we got to the area off the ferry port things had become a little bit more interesting and as you can see, one of the less experienced members of the group decided to go for a little dip. This was my first rescue in anger(all that training and did it work?) Judge for yourself - the shots took a little over 2 mins from the first to the last. IT PAYS TO TRAIN! Geoff.
